Freshmen Raise Money For IRC, Syrian Refugees
December 20, 2016
Mrs. Maculan's freshmen classes raised $255.67 for the Syrian Refugee fundraiser. Her Period 4 class alone raised over $100! This class earned a pizza party and chose to donate the money to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), specifically the Syrian refugee crisis. With a few anonymous donors, the fundraiser totaled $410. Mrs. Maculan is beyond proud of her freshmen students and staff for their generosity in this time of global need.
In addition to their ongoing efforts, as of December 14, the IRC has pledged specifically to aid families who are arriving in and around Al Dana from Aleppo. In a press release, the IRC stated: "To help ensure people can purchase the basics they need, the IRC will be giving $100 to 500 of the most vulnerable families. The IRC is hoping to secure more funding to reach all 800 of the new families in Al Dana, as well as to help any future arrivals."
Mrs. Maculan's students were first inspired after watching the film Salam Neighbor. What started as a small idea, sprung from a documentary in English class, evolved into a gift.
